Heraldry

As Laird or Lady of Dunans Castle, you’ll be entitled to use the specially designed insignia (above) elaborated from a beautiful stone plaque inset into the curtain wall of Dunans Castle. This insignia is carried on your deed of entitlement and incorporates heraldic devices from the Stewart and Fletcher clans as well as from the present Laird’s family crest (shown below).

The motto, “Recta Pete”, means ‘For Right’ and comes from the Clan Fletcher, while the words “Chaol Ghleann” are from the gaelic and translate as ‘the neck of the glen’ and are a reference to the location of your square foot of land. The hand-clasp around the sword or claymore in the original represents the close alliance in arms between the Fletchers and Stewarts, and is an echo of how the Fletcher clan came by their name, as fletchers or arms-makers. We chose to use this element of the insignia to represent the bonds of friendship which unite all who proudly carry the title, Laird or Lady of Dunans Castle.

The bull and hound are both associated with the Dixon-Spain family: the bull for the family’s origins in the Basque region of Spain and the hound for the family’s close relationship with the British countryside.
